Current trends in regenerative medicine are aimed at improving the quality of life of patients with inflammatory joint diseases that develop as a result of age-related changes or as a result of traumatic exposure. The development of synovial fluid substitutes based on hyaluronic acid allows to reduce pain and increase the mobility of such patients by restoring the physiological homeostasis of the affected joint.
The main task during the development of synovial fluid replacement products is to create a biomimetic formulation. The study of the physico-chemical properties of the synovial fluid of a healthy person includes the latest research methods of rheology and tribology, which makes it possible to reproduce its properties as closely as possible with the help of clinically tested biopolymers. The knowledge and experience gained during the development of synovial fluid substitutes are further used for the development of biodegradable implants in related therapy tasks, designed to temporarily replace biological fluids or tissues of the human body.
The result of the work of the scientific center was the synovial fluid implant Artro-Patch, which is made on the basis of cross-linked hyaluronic acid. The features of this implant are its long-term stay in the joint cavity in an unchanged state and its visco-elastic properties, selected to best match the properties of the synovial fluid of a healthy young person. The Artro-Patch injectable implant allows you to ensure not only the maximum functionality of the joint, but also additional mechanical protection of the articular cartilage affected by osteoarthritis. This makes it possible to extend the life of the joint and to improve the quality of life of patients as much as possible.
